SEN Teaching Assistant

Are you a dedicated and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant with experience in supporting secondary‑age students? Cover People are looking to appoint SEN TA’s for short and long‑term roles at a school based in South Manchester, working with pupils who have Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and other SEND.

You will join a committed team in a school that values inclusion, pastoral care and continuous development, helping students to overcome barriers and succeed both academically and personally.

This inclusive and nurturing school has a strong record of SEND provision and works closely with speech & language therapists and the Local Authority to ensure every learner receives the support they need. With a significant proportion of pupils on the SEND register, and effective systems in place to identify and provide for communication needs early, this is a chance to make a real difference at the start of children’s education.

This voluntary aided, mixed secondary school educates pupils aged 11–16 and is located within the Stockport area. It is a non-selective school that serves a diverse and inclusive community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work one‑to‑one and with small groups to support students in secondary years with SLCN and other SEND.
  • Help implement and deliver tailored interventions and support strategies under the guidance of SENCO / external specialists.
  • Collaborate with teachers, speech & language therapists, pastoral staff and external agencies to ensure consistent, coordinated support.
  • Promote students’ confidence, independence, and engagement in learning.
  • Assist in creating an inclusive, safe, and supportive learning environment.

Essential Criteria

  • Experience supporting pupils with SEN, especially in speech, language & communication needs.
  • Experience or familiarity working with secondary (11‑16) age pupils.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal skills, and ability to adapt approaches to different needs.
  • Patience, empathy, and a proactive, flexible mindset.
